Radial Drill Overhaul

A company contacted us because they needed to overhaul their broken radial drill. We performed an inspection (for a fee) to understand what type of work was necessary. We drew up an estimate, which the company accepted: the inspection was therefore not invoiced.

The radial drill arrived to us on a truck with a crane.

Everything is ready to start. The machine has the following problems:

Radial drill just arrived in the workshop

IT DOES NOT WORK

  • balancing the drilling spindle tube

  • the trapezoidal screw for raising and lowering the flag was worn out

  • the head brake

  • spindle motor control not working

  • the flag movement lever drops during processing

We remove the top of the head from the flag to check what is causing the problem with the dinghy.

Found it! The key that connects the tube to the balance chain is broken! We decide to redesign it and build it with the milling machine.

We start working on the head: it is separated from the flag and we put it on the table to be able to work on it better.

We disassemble the spindle to change the entire bearing group, as they are damaged.

A new trapezoidal screw is needed for the vertical movement of the flag: we order it and to bring it to its original shape, it is machined on the lathe and then on the milling machine.

Let's reassemble the gear set and evaluate the operation of the flag raising by means of the lever: it is correct!

Once the head has been reassembled and the brake adjusted, we proceed to reassemble the balancer which was not working due to the broken key. Now it is smooth and perfect, and does not show any signs of problems.

After mounting the head on the flag, we proceed to repair the head brake.

The brake, worn by a few tenths, no longer blocks. We put a spacer to bring the eccentric shaft closer to the flag: the brake blocks the head on the flag again.

This above is just the most substantial part of the work that lasted a total of 2 months. Once everything was completed, the machine works in every part without any problem of any kind: it started working like new again!
